How does Botox work?
Botox is a naturally occurring product derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the same bacteria that causes botulism (a form of food poisoning). However, don’t fret! Botox is medically safe when used in small doses and administered by trained personnel.
Cosmetically, Botox is injected into the facial muscles and is responsible for dynamic contractions like smiling, squinting, and frowning. The protein doesn’t affect the muscles but blocks the communication between the muscle’s nerves and the brain. When the nerve muscles are blocked, they relax, and the skin smooths out.
Unlike popular misconceptions, Botox doesn’t “freeze” your face. The injections only target the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. Otherwise, your primary functions of smiling, eating, and talking won’t be affected.Â

What should I expect from the Botox treatment?
Anti-wrinkle treatments in our office are quick and comfortable. Before we lift a syringe, we’ll ensure you are as comfortable as possible. The injections are painless because we apply a topical numbing agent on your face. Before your treatment, don’t apply any makeup and avoid alcohol or any blood thinning medications.
We carefully inject the Botox product into the targeted muscles with a fine needle. Treatment usually lasts about 15 minutes, and patients can resume daily activities. If any, the side effects are minimal and include slight headaches and swelling at the injection sites. After treatment, avoid massaging the area and direct heat exposure.
Results aren’t immediate, so don’t worry about those fine lines when you leave our office. However, you’ll notice some changes within 2-3 days, but it takes about two weeks for the results to peak. The Botox effects last 3-6 months, at which point you’ll need a retreatment session to maintain your results.
