The Tooth Implant Process: How It Works
Many people shy away from implants due to the fact that it requires surgery. However, surgery is what makes this restorative treatment unique. Implants are titanium screws that Drs. Ahkami and Reff use to replace lost tooth roots. We place these screws into your jaw surgically so they can fuse with your bone tissue and become a support system for your new teeth. In time, the implants will anchor dental crowns, a dental bridge, or implant dentures to make your smile whole and healthy again. Â
Depending on the complexity of your treatment, the tooth implant process can take four to nine months or longer to complete. Following are the steps of implant surgery.
- Step 1 – ConsultationÂ
Drs. Ahkami and Reff will assess your oral and general health to see if you’re a good candidate for implant treatment. We’ll take x-rays and other imaging to evaluate your gum health and bone density, as you must have a healthy jaw for implant placement. Good general health is also a plus to promote proper healing. If you’ve suffered extensive bone loss since losing permanent teeth, you may need a bone graft before proceeding with implant surgery.
- Step 2 – Implant SurgeryÂ
Implant surgery is the actual placement of your implants. We’ll cut open your gums to expose your jawbone. Holes are then drilled deep into the bone, and the implants are secured in place. Using modern implant technology, Drs. Ahkami and Reff can determine in advance the best locations for your implants to contribute to the success of your treatment.Â
- Step 3 – Healing
Once the implants have been placed, we’ll suture your gum to help it heal. Now comes a waiting period to give time for your implants to fuse with your bone tissue. This process is known as osseointegration. Your jawbone will grow around the implant to secure it firmly in place. It’s the fusing process that gives the implant stability to support your new teeth.Â
- Step 4 – Abutment Placement and Restoration
When the implant has healed, Drs. Ahkami and Reff will top it with a connector called an abutment to support your restoration and wait for that to heal. Finally, customized restorations are attached to make your smile whole again.Â
Your new smile will have a radiant, natural-looking appearance, and your replacement teeth will function every bit as your natural teeth for biting and chewing. That’s the restorative power of implants!
