Orthodontics need not be a taxing, uncomfortable treatment. With Invisalign, you can achieve your smile goals with less inconvenience. That’s because Invisalign uses clear orthodontic braces or aligners to realign your smile naturally. There’s no metal hardware to irritate your gums, lips, or cheeks. Drs. Behshad Ahkami and Steven Reff from Glow Dental Spa answer your questions about Invisalign treatment to help you decide if it’s right for you.
Invisalign offers a modern means of straightening crooked teeth. The system replaces metal hardware with clear aligner trays to shift crooked teeth into a straighter position. Invisalign can be used to correct problems with crooked teeth, minor to moderate bite issues, gaps between teeth, and overlapping or twisted teeth due to overcrowding.
Dr. Ahkami will take digital impressions of your teeth to get a clear picture of the problems that need to be fixed. This enables us to create a treatment plan conducive to your orthodontic needs. Invisalign aligners are customized for our patients to fit comfortably over their teeth and achieve their unique smile goals. When worn, the aligners place controlled pressure on your teeth to slowly move them into a straighter position. By switching to a new set of aligners every few weeks, you can keep the straightening process going until your treatment is complete. Afterward, you’ll wear a retainer at night to keep your teeth in their straightened position long-term.Â
We encourage all our patients to wear the aligners at least 20 to 22 hours daily. Naturally, this includes sleeping with your aligners. You should remove the aligners for eating and drinking beverages other than water, as well as for brushing and flossing your teeth. The length of your treatment will depend on the complexity of your case. Average treatment times to correct moderate orthodontic issues range from 12 to 18 months.
Invisalign aligners are made of clear, thermoplastic material, which isn’t as conspicuous as wearing metal brackets and wires on your teeth. Invisible aligners will make you feel less awkward going through orthodontic treatment. Comfort is another difference; the aligners contain no jagged parts to poke your gums or lips. Invisalign aligners are also removable for eating and oral hygiene. They won’t interrupt your meals or your ability to keep your mouth fresh and clean.Â
After removing your aligners, brush them gently with warm water and clear, liquid soap to remove saliva and debris. Always brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners, as it helps keep them clean. You can soak your aligners several times a week in Invisalign solution to eliminate plaque or bacteria. When not in use, store your aligners safely in their case to keep them safe from harm.Â
